The arrangement has a sonar system receiver with receivers or sub-bases that can be selected with distinctive inherent directional characteristics. Simulated or measurement data acquired via the directional characteristic are used as training data for a neural network (100). The trained network is integrated into the sonar system, the input neurons (101-108) subjected to input levels of the same transducers and an output neuron (130) gives the direction of incidence.
