Amino acid heterocyclic amide derivatives useful as nitric oxide synthase inhibitors, having formula (I) and pharmaceutically acceptable salts and prodrugs, wherein: J is O or S; B is NR<5>R<11> wherein R<11> is selected from a heterocyclic ring in which at least one member of the ring is carbon and in which 1 to about 4 heteroatoms are independently selected from oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur and said heterocyclic ring may be optionally substituted.
