FIELD: medicine. SUBSTANCE: method involves taking smears from superolateral vault of the vagina at the level of portio vaginalis. The sample is smeared as thin film over microscope slide surface. The cell material is fixed, colored, different types of cells are determined and counted. Conclusions are drawn concerning phases of reproductive cycle interdependent on functional state of ovary. Sample for analyzing cell composition is to be collected by taking cellular mass with artificial insemination pipet surface having finished rough end which length is 5-7 cm. Vaginal mirror is introduced through the illuminated cow pipet under visual control. Superficial cells and bare nuclei percentage and their shadows are determined in the smear. Maximum contents of superficial cells being 100% and that of bare nuclei and their shadows being not greater than 6.3%, follicular phase of sexual cycle in elk-cows is to be diagnosed.
