A cantilevered beam connector 10 comprises a contact 25 having a first beam length between a contact end 55 and a mounting end 90, a preloading abutment 95 preloading the beam and a pivoting abutment 105 which shortens the effective beam length. The contact may be one of a plurality mounted in a contact-carrying insert 20. The insert 20 is inserted a connector housing 15 containing the abutments 95, 105. During insertion each contact is guided by channels in the housing. The insert may engage the housing by means of a notch and tab. The cantilevered beam contact 55 extends into a recess 40 for receiving a counterpart. Shortening the length of the contact beam increases the spring force of the contact thereby providing more reliable contact.
