A vehicle power train includes an internal combustion engine 10 and an electric motor 12 operating in parallel. The torque output from the motor 12 is controlled so as to vary in time as a series of pulses which are synchronised with the pulses in torque from the engine 10. The total torque output of the power train can thereby be controlled so as to be smooth or spiked depending on the surface over which the vehicle is travelling. This can improve traction. |
