Compositions for protecting skin from ultraviolet radiation comprise a sunscreen agent and a cosmetically acceptable diluent or carrier comprising not less than 5% w/w of (a) castor oil stabilized by an antioxidant or (b) a mixture of two phenyl methyl silicones having viscosities at 25 DEG C of about 500 centistokes (cstk.) and 10-30 cstk. The compositions comprise oils, lotions, sprays, oil in water, water in oil, and vanishing creams, and foams. The sunscreen agents may be derivatives of benzoic acid, salicylic acid and benzophenone, e.g. esters of N-alkyl p-aminobenzoic acids, particularly ethyl p-dimethylaminobenzoate. Other pharmacologically active ingredients may be included, e.g. insect repellents such as dimethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate and N, N-diethyl-toluamide. Conventional antioxidants, e.g. butylated hydroxy toluene and butylated hydroxy anisole, are used to stabilize the castor oil. The silicone mixture may be that sold under the trade name "Silicones MS710/MS555". The formulations may contain solvents, preservatives, emulsifiers, humectants, perfumes, colouring matter, and water. Liquid lanolin and othoxylated lanolins may be used in the cream formulations.
