A diversity receiver comprises a plurality of receiver circuits 2<SB>1</SB>-2n and a selection circuit 4 for selecting the receiver with the best reception. In the abscence of any speech data in a received signal, a power supply circuit controller 10 controls the receiver power sources 11<SB>1</SB>-11<SB>n</SB> so that only one receiver is switched on. Upon detection of speech data, eg via voice amplitude detection in a DSP (fig.2), or amplitude detection of a demodulated digital (fig.5) or analogue (fig.7) signal, the remaining receiver circuits are powered up and the receiver with the best output is chosen. The linear CODEC 6 may also be switched off in the absence of speech data to make further power reductions.
