摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain high catalytic activity over a long period of time by using a metallic complex catalyst obtained by coordinating a metallic compound to the bipyridyl part of a carrier for a catalyst comprising a specified polymer. SOLUTION: The carrier for a catalyst comprises a polymer having a structural unit of the formula [where R1 and R2 are the same or different and are each H, a hydrocarbon, a halogen or an alkoxy and (n) is an integer of >=2, e.g. 2-100]. A metallic compound is coordinated to the bipyridyl part of the carrier to obtain the objective metallic complex catalyst. Cupric chloride or a halide of a metal such as ruthenium or rhodium is, e.g. used as the metallic compound. The metallic complex catalyst is obtained by allowing the metallic compound to react with the carrier in an appropriate solvent. The complex formation reaction is carried out, e.g. in an inert gaseous atmosphere of nitrogen or argon or in an atmosphere of carbon nonoxide under atmospheric pressure or elevated pressure.
