PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an indole capable of being produced by using an easily available raw material and useful as a high value intermediate for producing a dyestuff, a medicine, an agrochemical, etc. SOLUTION: This isoindole is a compound expressed by formula I [R1 is a halogen, 1-10C alkyl, aralkyl, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl or the like; R2 is a (substituted) aryl or heteroaryl], e.g. a compound of formula II. Further, to obtain the above compound, by passing through an o-phthalimidomethylbenzoic acid compound expressed by formula IV and obtained by reacting a benzoic acid derivative expressed by formula III with N-hydroxymethylphthalimide in the presence of an acid catalyst (e.g.; sulfuric acid) and performing the above reaction in a solvent such as methanol at 0-200 deg.C reaction temperature for approximately 1-20 hr. |
