In cracking a hydrocarbon wax in the vapour phase at 950-1175 DEG F. and not more than 100 psig for 5-30 seconds to produce a C10-C20 olefin product, the wax is chosen with an arbitrary melting point (3 DEG F. higher than the ASTM melting point) Y between 110 and 160 DEG F. and a refractive index nD at 80 DEG C. such that 4400 X - Y = 6144.5 /sB 7.5 where X is the refractive index, whereby the C10-C20 fraction of the product comprises at least 95 mol per cent of a -olefins and not more than 2% internal olefins. The cracking is effected by melting the wax by heating to not more than 800 DEG F. then passing the molten feed p into a cracking zone e.g. tube coils at a feed rate of 1-3 vol./vol./hr. wherein it is vaporized and cracked. A hot inert gaseous diluent such as steam or nitrogen may be used. Material boiling above C20 may be recycled.
|
