PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a zeolite membrane element having good properties stably by forming a strict zeolite membrane on a porousα-alumina base material whose average pore diameter is in a specified range and obtaining the porousα-alumina base material coated with the zeolite membrane having a specified helium gas permeability. SOLUTION: In the production of a zeolite membrane element having a zeolite membrane suitable for separating a mixed gas, a porousα-alumina base material of 0.05-20μm average pore diameter is used as a base material, a strict zeolite membrane is formed on the base material, and the porousα-alumina base material coated with the zeolite membrane of 10-5 mole/sec.m2.Pa or below helium gas permeability is obtained. As a method for making a zeolite membrane, various membrane making methods in which a zeolite skeleton metal source, an alkali metal source, and water are preferably used as starting raw materials, and a crystallization accelerator is added as required are applicable, and for example, a silica source and an alumina source are used as the zeolite skeleton metal source.
