PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hob unit and a gear machining method that can be installed on a combined finishing machine to uniformize the hob cutting blade wear and to reduce the tool exchange frequency, to improve the stiffness of the tool system and the vibration suppressing capability, and to generate a helical gear with a simple control. SOLUTION: A hob unit 1 is mounted to the X-Y end surface on a turret 6 of a combined finishing machine 2. A hob arbor 7 is mounted in the Y axis direction inside the hob unit 1. A hob drive motor 14 is connected to the extension shaft of the hob arbor 7 through a reduction gear with a coupling 13, and rotates the hob arbor 7 about the Y axis. A hob 8 is mounted approximately at the center of the hob arbor 7. Bearings 11 supporting the rotation of the hob arbor 7 are mounted on the both sides of the hob 8. A flywheel 12 is mountable on the other end of the hob arbor 7.
