PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable applying the coating liquid of the prescribed thickness to the surface of a sheet by measuring the actual thickness of a coating liquid film on a rotary roll with precision without depending on the variation of a moisture rate in coating liquid. SOLUTION: A method of applying coating liquid to the surface of a sheet includes: (a) a process in which by measuring OH groups in the coat liquid on the surface of a rotary roll 2 by a thickness measuring instrument utilizing non-contact reflecting infrared rays, the thickness of the coating liquid applied on the surface of the roll 2 is measured, (b) a process in which the OH groups in the coating liquid applied to the rotary roll 2 is measured by a moisture meter 9, (c) a process in which data based on the OH groups measured by the moisture meter 9 are converted to a in-liquid moisture rate, and (d) a process in which the moisture rate data changed with time are subjected to feedback to the film thickness data of the coating liquid of the process (a).
