Diagnostic test papers for determining protein comprise an absorbent carrier impregnated with a "protein error" dyestuff indicator, an acidic buffer and zinc and/or magnesium sulphate. Specified indicators are tetrabromobenzaurin, ethyl and butyl esters of tetrabromophenolphthalein and tetrabromophenol blue. The specified buffer is citric acid/tertiary sodium citrate. Surface active agents may also be present, e.g. fatty alcohol sulphonates, alkyl aryl sulphonates, polycarboxylic acid ester sulphonates, fatty acid taurides and glycides, polycarboxylic acid alkylamide sulphonic acids, alkyl sulphone glycides and N-substituted fatty amide sulphonates. If desired the test paper may be sealed between a white and a transparent resin foil as in Specification 960,803; or welded on to one or both sides of a synthetic resin foil; or sealed on to synthetic resin foils as in Specification 1,042,670. The carrier may be first impregnated with the indicator and buffer (as in Specifications 814,223, 826,066, 840,362), dried, and impregnated with the sulphate. Alternatively, it may be first impregnated with the buffer substance, dried, and impregnated with the dyestuff and sulphate (as in Specification 997,644). The sulphate is preferably dissolved in methanol or ethanol. |
