PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal recording material of high coloring density whose thermal recording layer is excellent in water resistance, oil resistance, and adhesive strength, and its production method which is efficient and of high productivity. SOLUTION: In a thermal recording material having thermal recording layers on a support, at least one of the thermal recording layers is added with a substantially colorless coloring component A and a substantially colorless component B which develops color by reacting with the component A, and at least one of the components A, B is encapsulated into microcapsules produced in the presence of at least one surface active polymer containing at least 5 mole % of a unit expressed by a formula. In the formula, R is 4-22C aliphatic hydrocarbon group; A is 1-50C divalent aliphatic group; M is a cation which can form a salt with a sulfonic acid or a cationic radical; B is -O- or -NH-; m1 and m2 are each 0 or 1. |
