PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject sulfated product with favorable hue by sulfation of a feedstock higher alcohol ethoxylate containing a higher alcohol monoethoxylate with diluted sulfur trioxide at specified concentrations. SOLUTION: This sulfated product of the formula: R1O(C2H4O)nSO3H is obtained by sulfation of a feedstock higher alcohol ethoxylate of the formula: R1O(C2H4)nH ((n) is >=0) containing >=50 wt.% of a higher alcohol monoethoxylate of the formula: R1O(C2H4O)1H (R1 is an 8-20C alkyl) using sulfur trioxide diluted with an inert gas and having a concentration of 0.1-3 vol.% in the total gas.
