PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful as a catalytic component for polymerizing an olefin. SOLUTION: This compound is a one of formula I (M is a group VIII-X transition metal in the periodic table; R1 to R4 are each H or a 1-24C hydrocarbon, a 1-24C hydrocarbon containing a halogen, oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur; R5 is a divalent 1-20C hydrocarbon, or the like; L is a ligand; (m) is 0-5; X is H, a halogen or the like; (n) is 0-3; 1<=m+n<=5; a dotted line is a coordinate bond), e.g. a compound of formula II. The compound of formula I, e.g. in the case of the compound of formula II, is obtained by adding 2,6-diisopropylaniline to a benzene slurry of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde, refluxing the obtained mixture, adding ethanol to the refluxing mixture to provide the ligand of 2,6- diisopropyl-N- 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzylidene}aniline, adding anhydrous tetrahydrofuran to a mixture of the obtained ligand with anhydrous cobalt chloride to react, and further adding diethyl ether to the reacted product.
