PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a printing apparatus performing the multicolor printing of printing data by fully using a color ink ribbon wherein a plurality of color inks are arranged in predetermined repetition. SOLUTION: The number K of data rows required in printing at every printing lines R (=0-m) is counted with respect to printing data by color of Y, M, C stored in a printing data memory to be stored in a ribbon consumption length memory as ribbon consumption lengths K0-Km and, on the basis of the ribbon consumption lengths K0-Km at every printing lines R (=0-m) by color of Y, M, C stored in the ribbon consumption length memory, the combination data of printing lines becoming printing length L (<= M) not exceeding the ink length M of one unit of an ink ribbon is calculated and, by the printing of combined printing lines printable in ink lengths of one unit of respective inks Y, M, C, color printing by an ink ribbon of one set of Y, M, C is performed and, by the repetition of this, color printing corresponding to the printing data of all printing lines is performed.
