PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable applying a preliminary coating layer having the excess quantity in a stable state without turbulence of a coating point due to carrier air being generated in a coating method based on a rod coat system by pressing the head end part of an extrusion head part against one surface of a web spread between web guide rollers to perform coating. SOLUTION: In this coating method, the head end surface of an extrusion head part EX is pressed against one surface of a web W spread between web guide rollers GR to apply a preliminary coating layer to it. In this way, by a meniscus of coating liquid formed in a small clearance between a front edge surface FE of the extrusion head part EX and one surface of the entering web W, carrier air entering the coating point on the doctor edge surface near an outlet of a slot SL increased with making high the ravel speed of the web can be prevented. As a result, turbulence of the coating point due to the carrier air is not generated to enable fixing the preliminary coating layer having the excess quantity in a stable state. Furthermore, by specifying the preliminary coating layer thickness to a final coating layer and an imaginary coating layer, stable coating in a rod part can be performed.
