PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing a novel autoxidation polymerization type Japanese lacquer which enables air drying at normal temperatures and humidities without requiring a high humidity atmosphere after coating by polymerizing a Japanese lacquer solution in a reaction vessel to an ultimate molecular weight of a liquid which renders coating possible and then, adding a solvent to the resulting liquid to form a Japanese lacquer coating. SOLUTION: Enzyme polymerization is effected until the oligomer component of urusiol comes to 50% or more by stirring (including a suitable means to promote the enzyme reaction such as kneading and rubbing and milling) of crude Japanese lacquer while retaining the water content and temperature sufficient to maintain the enzyme reaction of urusiol. Further, a polyhydric alcohol may be added to the crude Japanese lacquer, and as the polyhydric alcohol, a mono- or diethylene glycol or glycerin may be used singly or as a mixture of at least two of these compounds, and an oxidizing agent may further be added to the crude Japanese lacquer.
