PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially, readily and economically produce the subject compound useful as a pigment, etc., in good purity without any by-product such as PCB by reacting o-phthalodinitrile under specific conditions. SOLUTION: (D) o-Phthalodinitrile which is unsubstituted or has a substituent group is reacted in the presence of (B) an inorganic base (e.g. lithium hydroxide) and (C) a ferrocene compound in (A) an alcoholic solvent (e.g. ethylene glycol). Furthermore, the ferrocene compound represented by the formula (R1 and R2 are each a halogen, nitro, formyl or the like) is used as the component C, which is preferably used in an amount within the range of (1/20) to (1/4) based on 1 mol of the component D. The component B is preferably used in an amount within the range of (1/20) to (1/2) based on 1 mol of the component D and the reactional temperature is preferably about 80-180 deg.C.
