PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To clean a sulfonation or sulfuric esterification apparatus, which is used for sulfonating or sulfuric esterifying an organic compound with a sulfur trioxide gas, in a short time by a simple operation by bringing a higher alcohol into contact with dirt attached to the apparatus. SOLUTION: A higher alcohol having an alkyl group with an average carbon chain length of 6-18, an ethylene oxide adduct thereof, etc. are listed as the higher alcohols. The number of moles of ethylene oxide added is preferably 2-7 per mole of higher alcohol. The cleaning operation is varied with the type of the apparatus. Preferably, cleaning with warm water of 50 deg.C or higher is done before cleaning with the higher alcohol. Warm water is used in an amount of about 10-100 L/m2 (based on the cleaned area). The higher alcohol is used in an amount of about 5-50 L/m2. Examples of the organic compound are an alkylbenzene and n-paraffin.
