PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a monodisperse polymer having a narrow molecular weight distribution by polymerizing a conjugated diene monomer in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator and a specific transition metal compound. SOLUTION: (A) A conjugated diene monomer (e.g. 2-chloro-1,3-butadiene, butadiene, isoprene, or the like) is polymerized in the presence of (B) a radical polymerization initiator [e.g. 2,2'-azobis(4-methoxy-2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile), isobutyryl peroxide, or the like] and (C) a transition metal compound of the formula MXmYn (M is Ni, Co, Fe, Ru, Rh of Pd; X is H, Cl, Br or I; Y is a phosphorus-containing compound; m+n is a total which M can bond or coordinate; m>=1; n>=0) [e.g. NiCl2(PPh3)2 (PPh3 is triphenylphosphine), etc.], preferably at -78 to 120 deg.C. The amount of the component C added is preferably 0.01-10 mol% based on the component A.
