[Also in Division E2] A locking device for a motor vehicle having a key-operated lock structure, the key of which can be turned from a central position in one direction to operate an associated switch mechanism and in the opposite direction to produce movement of a locking slide comprises a slide interlock which prevents movement of the slide to a locking position unless the lock structure has first been depressed and a lock interlock which prevents movement of the key to the locking position of the lock structure is depressed when the key is on the switch operating side. The lock body 14 is free to slide axially in a housing 1 which is split at one end and bolted to a steering column. The body 14, which moves against the action of a spring 16 and is limited by a pin 17 has a pin tumbler with a projecting stem 18. When the key is rotated clockwise the stem 18 turns the switch mechanism 19 to close the ignition circuit further rotation closes the engine starter, solenoid circuit. A spring returns the lock body to the ignition position and the key cannot be withdrawn in either position. When the lock body 14 is depressed axially and the key turned anticlockwise a circuit for auxiliaries is closed and the key cannot be withdrawn; further rotation to a locking position causes the slide 6 to move a bolt section 10 against spring action to engage a recess in the core of the steering column. The key can then be withdrawn with the vehicle immobilized. The slide 6 is moved by a pin 23 projecting from a plate 20 on the stem 18 and engaging in an aperture in the slide. The slide interlock comprises a leaf spring 25 attached to the slide and engaging the wall of the bore 21 until the lock body 14 is depressed to disengage it. The lock interlock comprises a tongue 28 or a key plate 27 which engages the pin 23 of the lock body is depressed, before the key is rotated anticlockwise to the auxiliaries position. |
