The apparatus for core packaging includes a pallet which can be driven into an open tool unit formed by horizontally divided top and bottom tools of a core shooting machine. This allows removal of the cores from the top tool. The pallet is lifted and lowered relative to the top tool (and the cores to be ejected) by the bottom tool. To remove cores (8, 8', 10, 10') and to form core packages before leaving the tool unit (1), the pallet is moved successively to regions (4, 5) of the top tool (2) with at least two cores, and is lifted up by the bottom tool (3). The pallet has centring elements which interact with the corresponding centring elements of the top and bottom tools. Also claimed is a corresponding method for operating the proposed apparatus. The pallet is centred for core removal operations which take place in succession so that a core package can be formed at the same time.
