PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the wear resistance, heat resistance and corrosion resistance of a coating film by composing an oxide layer applied to a base material of Al oxide and one or more elements selected from the group IVa, Va and VIa elements other than Al and making the oxide layer to be the crystalline one. SOLUTION: As to a wear resistant coating film, one or more kinds of elements selected from the group IVa, Va and VIa elements, B and Si are used as oxide constituting elements other than Al to compose an oxide layer together with Al oxide. This wear resistant coating film has about 0.5 to 20μm film thickness and is applied to the surface of a hard base material such as WC base cemented carbide, cermet, high speed steel or the like, a surface hardened base material, a Ti-C-Al2O3 sintered compact, a silicon nitride sintered compact, a diamond sintered compact or the like to form a wear resistant member. The ratio in the number of atoms between Al in the oxide layer to be applied and the oxide constituting elements other than Al is controlled to 0.4 to 0.99, and the crystal structure of the oxide layer is preferably formed of the corundum one.
