In accordance with this method, no anticoagulant is added to whole blood upstream of a blood component separator (46) during separation. Anticoagulant is added to a separated component, such as platelet-rich plasma. By eliminating anticoagulant addition to whole blood before separation, an increase in platelet yield during the blood component separation step is achieved.
