Optical analysis of micro volume samples

Micro volumes of liquid samples are optically analysed using a tubular sampling member 10 whose bore is self filled with a liquid test sample 18 by capillary action. The distal end of the member is engaged in a tubular holder 24, e.g. via a plastic hub 22, with the end of the liquid filled bore being open to the interior of the holder 24. The holder is pressurised internally to expel the sample from the capillary after the optical analysis typically by use of an air pump 34. The bore of the tubular sampling member when filled with test liquid may form a liquid core optical wave guide.
