PURPOSE: An apparatus for detecting an image motion by a gradient-pattern matching and a method thereof are provided to accurately detect a motion by setting up a motion detection area in an input image, and by using a gradient-pattern area from pixels in each detection area. CONSTITUTION: A motion vector detection unit is composed of a gradient-pattern converter(210), a representative pattern memory(220) and a motion vector determination unit(260). The motion vector determination unit(260) is composed of a pattern matching unit(230), a correlation value cumulating unit(240) and the maximum coordinate determination unit(250).
