The digital data signals which represent individual text characters or elements of bit-map images have a limited number of values. The method uses a sequence of steps. All possible values are stored in coding memories (3, 4). The incoming data stream is chopped into blocks which can be compared with the stored codes. The block values of the data segments are stored along with positional sequence numbers. Independent claims are included for a unit for storing digital values.
