N-SUBSTITUTED 4-HYDROXY-INDOLE DERIVATIVES AND COMPOSITIONS FOR DYEING KERATINOUS FIBERS CONTAINING THEM

A compsn. for dyeing keratin fibres, esp. human keratin fibres, e.g. hair, contains (a) a suitable medium; (b) at least one N-substd. deriv. of 4-hydroxyindole, or an addn. salt with an acid, of formula (I); and (c) at least one oxidn. base. R1 = 1-4C monohydroxyalkyl; 2-4C polyhydroxyalkyl; (1-4C alkoxy)(1-4C alkyl); (1-4C hydroxyalkoxy)(1-4C alkyl); 1-4C aminoalkyl, opt. with the amino mono- or di-substd. by 1-4C, opt. monohydroxy, alkyl, acetyl or 2-4C polyhydroxyalkyl; (1-4C alkyl)(1-4C thioalkyl); (1-4C, opt. monohydroxy, alkyl)(1-4C thioalkyl); (2-4C polyhydroxyalkyl)(1-4C thioalkyl); 2-5C carboxyalkyl; (1-4C alkoxy)(2-5C carbonylalkyl); or acetylamino-, cyano-, trifluoro-, halo-, phospho-, or sulpho-(1-4C alkyl); R2, R3 = H, halo, 1-4C alkyl, COOH, (1-4C alkoxy)carbonyl, or formyl; R4 = H, halo, 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy; acetylamino; 1-5C monohydroxyalkyl; 2-4C polyhydroxy-alkyl; (1-4C alkoxy)(1-4C alkyl); thiophene; furan; or Ph or aryl(1-4C alkyl), both opt. substd. by halo, 1-4C alkyl, CF3, 1-4C alkoxy, or amino opt. mono- or di-substd. by 1-4C alkyl; (1-4C alkyl)(1-4C aminoalkyl) or (1-4C dialkyl)(1-4C aminoalkyl). (I) are new, with the provisos that: when R2 = R4 = H, and R1 = methoxymethyl or ( gamma -chloro, beta -hydroxypropyl), then R3 is not formyl; and when R2 = R3 = R4 = H, then R1 is not dimethylaminoethyl. Also new are intermediates of formula (II) with the provisos that: when R2 = Me, R3 = H or Et and R4 = H, then R1 is not hydroxymethyl; when R2 = R4 = H, and R3 = Me, then R1 is not hydroxymethyl; and when R2 = R3 = R4 = H, then R1 is not beta -chloroethyl.
