PURPOSE: A method for converting the VPI(Virtual Path Identifier) of an ATM cell header using digital memory elements is provided to convert the VPI of an ATM cell header using digital memory elements in an apparatus to convert VPIs. CONSTITUTION: A user inputs a new VPI value to the fourth digital memory element(S200). The user accepts the first byte of the header of an input ATM cell through the first digital memory element(S201). The user moves the lower-level 4 bits of the first digital memory element to the higher-level 4 bits of the third digital memory element(S202). The user moves all the data of the first digital memory element to the second digital memory element(S203). The user accepts the second byte of the input ATM cell header through the first digital memory element(S204). The user moves the higher-level 4 bits of the first digital memory element to the lower-level 4 bits of the third digital memory element(S205). The user moves the higher-level 4 bits of the fourth digital memory element to the lower-level 4 bits of the second digital memory element(S206). The user outputs the information of the second digital memory element(S207). The user moves the contents of the first digital memory element to the second digital memory element(S208). The user moves the lower-level 4 bits of the fourth digital memory element to the higher-level 4 bits of the second digital memory element(S209). The user outputs the information of the second digital memory element(S210).
