PURPOSE: An apparatus for generating VP-OAM cells is provided to achieve an economical configuration of a circuit by making VP-OAM cells efficiently generated for a plurality of UNI channels with a simple circuit configuration. CONSTITUTION: A bit counter(10) executes a counting operation by an input clock and generates a clock, a VPI bit, a channel selection bit and an OAM type bit. A dual port RAM(20) outputs corresponding OAM cell data to an OAM cell determination part(30) according to the VPI bit, the channel selection bit and the OAM type bit supplied from the bit counter(10). The OAM cell determination part(30), receiving the OAM data from the dual port RAM(20) and the VPI bit, the channel selection bit and the OAM type bit from the bit counter(10), extracts a VPI, determines an OAM transmitting channel and the kind of a generated OAM type and outputs relevant signals. An OAM cell pattern generation part(40) generates an OAM cell data pattern according to the signal about the generated OAM type. A UTOPIA interface(50), receiving the VPI and the OAM transmitting channel signal from the OAM cell determination part(30) and the OAM cell data pattern from the OAM cell pattern generation part(40), transmits VP-OAM cells to a transmitting channel corresponding to the OAM transmitting channel signal through a UTPIA(Universal Test and operation Physical Interface for ATM). A microprocessor interface(60), interfacing a microprocessor and the dual port RAM(20), inputs data from the microprocessor to the dual port RAM(20).
