Veneer cutting machine and nose bar device therefor

A nose bar device 21 in a rotary veneer lathe for peeling a wood veneer sheet from a rotating log 11 is claimed. The lathe has a knife carriage movable toward and away from log 11 and a knife 17 is mounted on the knife carriage and has at the tip end thereof, a cutting edge 17a extending horizontally across the direction in which knife carriage is moved. A plurality of nose bars 21 are juxtaposed along cutting edge 17a of knife 17 mounted to a part of the knife carriage and each has at the lower end thereof a pressure edge located adjacent to the cutting edge of knife and has a width extending in parallel to the cutting edge of knife for pressing against the log adjacent to the cutting edge of knife 17. The nose bar mounting part of the knife carriage is movable independently of the knife carriage and a mechanism 29 for independently adjustably moving the pressure edge of at least one of nose bars toward and away from the cutting edge of knife 17, is clamed.
