A crate is disclosed for holding milk cartons has side walls with large openings such that the milk cartons can be removed from the crate through the side wall openings and not necessarily through the top opening. This allows the crates to be stacked on top of each other while still providing access to the cartons. To prevent the cartons from falling through the openings, a slidable barrier is provided which can be slid out of the way to allow cartons to be removed. The barrier inter-engages with internal guides of the crate with inter-engaging surfaces being curved over their full extent.
