PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prolong a maximum effective stroke of a hydraulic tensioner but to have a normal piston length under a degenerate state. SOLUTION: A piston 30 slidable within a chamber 22 of the cylinder 20, a pressurized fluid source for applying pressurized fluid into the chamber 22, and a spring 40 for energizing the piston 30 towards the projecting direction from the cylinder 20 are provided. The piston 30 is composed of mutually slidable first and second piston elements 31, 32. The external face of the first piston element 31 is arranged with a piston ring 313, while the internal face of the second piston element 32 is formed with a groove with which the piston ring 313 is engagable. The external face of the second piston element 32 is arranged with a piston ring 324, while the internal face of the cylinder 20 is formed with a groove with which the piston ring 324 is engagable. |
