PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To put the magnetostriction of a free magnetic layer within an appropriate range and to reduce the generation of Barkhausen noise by forming an antiferromagnetic layer comprising a PtMn alloy film or an X-Mn alloy film on the free magnetic layer, forming the free magnetic layer by an NiFe alloy film and properly controlling the thickness and the composition ratio. SOLUTION: An antiferromagnetic layer comprising a PtMn alloy film or an X-Mn alloy film (X is Pd, Ru, Ir, Os or Rh) is formed on a free magnetic layer having a laminated structure consisting of an NiFe alloy film and a Co or Co alloy film. The thickness of the free magnetic layer is 30-100Åand the ratio of the thickness of the Co or Co alloy film to that of the free magnetic layer is >0 to 0.5. The Ni composition ratio of the NiFe alloy film is 82-85 at.%.
