PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain high density recording by the conversion of a medium into a thin film and the reduction of noise due to the suppression of magnetic interaction between magnetic particles by disposing an antiferromagnetic underlayer next to a magnetic recording layer formed from a ferromagnetic material. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium 10 consists of a nonmagnetic substrate 1 and a ferromagnetic recording layer 4 provided on the nonmagnetic substrate 1 through an antiferromagnetic underlayer 3 and provides the antiferromagnetic underlayer 3 next to the ferromagnetic recording layer 4. The ferromagnetic recording layer 4 is particularly disposed just on the underlayer 3. By exchange coupling force which acts on the interface between the underlayer 3 and the magnetic recording layer 4 which are disposed as the above, the thermal stability of the medium 10 can be ensured. When an antiferromagnetic material having a body-centered cubic structure, particularly a cubic crystal structure with a matching face so that an axis of easy magnetization with uniaxial crystal magnetic anisotropy is inplane-oriented, is used as a material forming the antiferromagnetic underlayer 3, coercive force can be enhanced.
