PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a color liquid crystal display device capable of making multicolor display of >=3 colors with a time-division drive system in a wide temperature range from -20 deg.C to +70 deg.C by setting the nematic-isotropic transition temperature of liquid crystals at a specific temperature or above. SOLUTION: A pair of polarizing plates 1 and 2 are arranged across a liquid crystal layer 3 and a driving circuit for impressing driving voltage is disposed between transparent electrodes 7 and 8. The nematic-isotropic transition temperature of the liquid crystals is set at >=105 deg.C and the product of the refractive index anisotropy of the liquid crystals in the liquid crystal layer 3 and the thickness of the liquid crystal layer 3 is set at 1.0 to 2.5 μm. In addition, multiple colors of >=3 colors are developed in the same display unit by selecting the different voltage values of >=3 values by time-division driving. In addition, a phase difference plate 4 is preferably used for increasing the degree of freedom in the selection of the color development state. As a result, the change in the color development state in a temperature region apart from room temperature is suppressed and the adaptable operating temperature range is widened. |
