PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a perpendicular alignment layer capable of controlling pretilt angle and giving a high contrast ratio without generating domains by forming a 2nd alignment layer by the photopolymerization of a photopolymerizable low molecular liquid crystal layer on a 1st alignment layer which attains horizontal alignment. SOLUTION: A solution containing a photopolymerizable low molecular liquid crystal and a photoinitiator is applied on a 1st alignment layer 21 and the solvent is removed by heating. The photopolymerizable low molecular liquid crystal is turned to the liquid state by further heating and irradiated with UV. By this irradiation, the low molecular liquid crystal is photopolymerized and a 2nd alignment layer 22 is formed. substrates 1, 2 with the two alignment layers 21, 22 are combined so that the alignment directions of the 1st alignment layers 21 are made anti-parallel to each other. The photopolymerizable low molecular liquid crystal is formed into the layer 22 of 300 nm thickness and the alignment is controlled by the surface tension and the alignment regulating power of the 1st alignment layer 21. The objective perpendicular alignment layer uniform in pretilt angle over the almost entire surface is obtained. |
