PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium which keeps the noise of the medium low and ensures improved overwriting characteristics and enhanced resolving power. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording layer 5 consisting of a nonmagnetic material 3 and ferromagnetic grains 4 uniformly dispersed in the material 3 is disposed on a nonmagnetic substrate 1 by way of an underlayer 2 comprising a nonmagnetic material to obtain the objective magnetic recording medium 10. The underlayer 2 comprises a CrMo underlayer consisting essentially of chromium and molybdenum.
