PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a luminance control system for optimizing a dynamic range of a sensor of an area of interest in a visual field of an imager. SOLUTION: Image data is received from the sensor, an object of interest in an image is discriminated (40), a luminance level of a part of an image area including a background area to surround the object is detected (41), the luminance level in which the part of the image area is adjusted so that luminance of the object is optimized for the background area surrounding it is determined (45) and the luminance level of the image area is changed as the adjusted luminance level by controlling the image sensor (46).
