摘要 A recombinant DNA comprising a sequence corresponding to nucleotides 31-2079 of the 3747 bp sequence given in the specification is new. Also claimed are: (1) a recombinant nucleic acid (NA) as DNA or cRNA, encoding a plant retinoblastoma (Rb) protein having A and B pocket subdomains having a sequence 30-75% homologous to the human Rb protein; (2) a NA encoding a plant Rb protein having one or more characteristics different from animal Rb proteins; (3) a protein encoded by the above NA or novel proteins derived from such NA preferably by mutagenesis; (4) anti-sense DNA or RNA of a gene encoding a plant Rb protein, especially containing a NA as above; (5) vectors, cells, plants or animals comprising a NA as above; and (6) a NA encoding a protein in which one or more sites are altered or deleted, making the protein more resistant to phosphorylation and thus its functionality such that binding E2F or a similar function. #CMT#USE : #/CMT# The NA encodes a plant, preferably the maize Rb protein, especially the clone ZmRb1. The protein and anti-sense sequences to the NA can be used to control the proliferation of plant cells and/or plant virus, especially a Geminivirus, within the cell by increasing or decreasing the level and/or activity of plant Rb protein, especially where the virus binds an Rb protein to release a transcription factor.
