Concentrated aqueous borated solutions containing a complex of a boron compound and an alkanolamine. The new solutions have a theoretical B2O3 content of 5 - 40%, preferably 30 - 40% and contain: (a) an aminoboron compound formed from a boron compound, preferably boric acid, and ethanolamine, diethanolamine or aminoisopropanol and/or an aliphatic polyamine selected from diethylene triamine and dipropylene triamine; (b) an alkaline and/or organic soap formed from a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid of up to 22 C atoms, or a mixture of such acids, and an organic or mineral base; (c) a sequestering and complexing agent for alkaline earth and heavy metals and which is a polycarboxylic acid, a phosphonic acid, a polyacrylic acid or a nitritriacetic (sic) acid and their alkaline salts, or an alkaline phosphate or an alkaline polyphosphate, and their mixtures; and optionally (d) a preservative, preferably a chlorinated or non-chlorinated isothiazolinone or a copper salt. The solutions preferably contain 10 - 75% boric acid and 5 - 25% monoethanolamine, the weight ratio of boric acid to amine being at least 2, preferably 3.
