PURPOSE: A subscriber interface unit having fax/modem communications in a WLL(Wireless Local Loop) system and a method thereof are provided to use a voice decoder/encoder until call access and to use a transcoder switching signal if a base station recognizes a modem tone and sends recognized information to a base station controller so that switching can be made to a PCM converter. CONSTITUTION: A subscriber line interface part(10) is connected to a fax/modem. A controller(20) connected to the subscriber line interface part(10) outputs control signals to control each component. A switching part(30) carries out switching for a signal of the subscriber line interface part(10). A transcoder(40) converts an analog signal into a digital signal according to the switching of the switching part(30). A CDMA modem part(50) processes signals to access base stations in a CDMA method. An ADC/DAC converter(60) converts an analog signal of the CDMA modem part(50) into a digital signal or its digital signal into an analog signal. An amplifier(70) amplifies an output signal of the ADC/DAC converter(60) up to a required level. An RF transceiver part(80) receives or transmits radio signals from/or base stations.
