Arranging vocoder and non vocoder data into frames for transmission

Various types of data, and at various rates, may be arranged into a uniquely structured format for transmission. Data for transmission formatting may be speech data provided by a vocoder or different types of secondary traffic. The data is organized into frames of a predetermined time duration for transmission by a microprocessor. The data frames are organized, depending on the data, to be at one of several data rates. To transmit such a frame at a predetermined rate the data frame is received and a set of parity check bits and tail bits for the frame are generated in accordance with the frame rate. An augmented data frame including the parity check bits and the tail bits derived from the data frame is encoded and transmitted.
