PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To widen a vertical scan zoom range or read resolution range which can be set without widening the variable vertical scan range of the image scanner part of the digital copying machine or image reader. SOLUTION: For the digital copying machine, a microcontroller for total operation control calculates a line thinning-out rate N/M and the vertical scanning speed V of the image scanner part from equations V=max(min(vmax, V0/R), vmin) and N/M=R.V/V0. Here, R is the zoom ratio in the vertical scanning direction, V0 is the vertical scanning speed of the image scanner part at the nonmagnification copying, max(a, b) and min(a, b) are selection operations of a large and a small argument respectively, vmax and vmin are the maximum and minimum values of the vertical scanning speed respectively. When R>V 0/vmin, V=vi and desired enlargement can be performed with a setting of N/M=R.V/V0. In the equation, vi is settable on a spot and the vertical scanning speed when vi<vmin.
