New recombinant DNA molecule (I) comprises in operative sequence: (a) promoter which functions in plant cells to cause the production of a RNA sequence; (b) structural coding sequence that encodes for production of lactoferricin, and (c) 3' non-structural region which functions in plant cells to cause the addition of polyadenylate nucleotides to the 3' end of the RNA sequence. Also claimed are: (1) a plant comprising cells which express lactoferricin; (2) a seed, preferably packaged or coated, which when germinated and cultivated will produce a plant according to (1); (3) use of lactoferricin to control plant pathogens, and (4) a commercial bag containing seed according to (2). The promoter is the ubiquitin promoter, the 3' non-translated region is the nopaline synthase transcriptional terminator for Agrobacterium tumifaciens and the lactoferricin is lactoferricin B. #CMT#USE : #/CMT# Transgenic, disease-resistant plants, preferably maize, wheat and sugar beet, can be produced by inserting (I) into the genome of a plant cell, obtaining transformed plant cells and regenerating from the transformed plant cells transgenic plants which express lactoferricin in an amount effective to reduce damage from disease (claimed). Plant pathogens, including viral, bacterial and fungal plant pathogens, can be controlled by exposing the pathogens to a plant according to (1) (claimed). |
