PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the hydraulic control device of an automatic transmission which can judge a speed change start timing properly in not only a regular time and acceleration time but a deceleration time. SOLUTION: This is provided with a speed change control part 21e for judging that the second speed change of opposite direction to this first speed change is ordered during the first speed change, speed change control means 21a, 21b for starting the second speed change by the cut, contact operation of a friction engage element based on the judge of the second speed change order, a speed change start judge means 21c for detecting and calculating the rotation difference between the number of rotation of the input shaft and the number of rotation of the output shaft after the second speed change at a prescribed time interval periodically and by which the point of time when the change direction of the rotation difference at certain point of time is changed is judged to the point of time when the second speed change is started and a feedback control means 21a, 21b by which the cut, contact operation by the feedback control of the friction engage element through a hydraulic control means is started based on the speed change start judge from the speed change start judge means.
