PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a confocal optical scanning probe system which allows sufficient ordinary endoscopic inspection and allows easy confocal optical scanning (microscopic) inspection as well. SOLUTION: This confocal optical scanning probe system 1 makes an endoscope 3 containing a CCD 18 for obtaining endoscopic images and an optical scanning probe 3 or 4 provided with side view scanners 49, 86 respectively in front ends 48, 84 freely attachably and detachably connectable to a controller 5. The signal obtained by the CCD 18 is subjected to signal processing by a CCU 20 and the endoscopic image signal is displayed as the endoscope image on a monitor 47 via a superimposer 46. The laser beam from the optical scanning probe 3 or 4 or a laser beam light source 79 is transmitted by an optical fiber 69 or 69' and the examinee side is irradiated with this light via the side view scanner 49 or 86. Only the light from its focus is converted to an electric signal by a photodetector 8 through a reverse route. This electric signal is converted to a confocal optical scanning image signal by a controller 65 so that this signal may be displayed together with the endoscopic image on the monitor 47.
